I am thinking of you today, Jayne, and sending good energy for the best possible outcome. Thank you for fearlessly stating your Truth. As I said to another writer, our willingness to be vulnerable with others is a strength that brings unity. Carry on!

Thank you for your beautiful words! They mean everything at this stressful and strange time. The reminder that it is okay to be vulnerable is especially comforting. I’m very grateful for friends and readers like you 😊❤️

Very well explained. Must be liberating to be able to write this story down, thank you for opening up on this and sharing it. Certainly as we talked the other day: every death is also a rebirth. Know that Santillana might not want you but the world does and you'll certainly be closer to where you need to be <3 love you!

Hello my love! I'm so glad to read this. Your ability to canalize a moment of uncertainty and stress into art and reflection tells me you are doing alright :) And that's all I care about really, that you are alright. I was very sad to go, as you know, because I left behind some remarkable people. But it was definitely the best move for me. I would have struggled under the stress of the ERE and it's good for me that I avoided it. Can't wait to see you soon!

Thank you ❤️ It’s been a lot more emotionally stressful than I anticipated. It’s very strange to think this could be my last week…!

To put such a distressing, uncertain time into such an eloquent, moving passage is a skill indeed. I am sorry for this unwarranted, unwelcome turbulence but grateful that you have a team of informed, badge wearing, colleagues in arms to support you. Sending you much love as you navigate this sea of uncertainty, and hope that you soon have clarity and can forge a new path ahead. Thank you for sharing such an important stack. Love and light dear heart.

Thank you, Pam. As always, your words are comforting and uplifting ❤️ I was a little nervous about sharing this ‘stack, but it’s important, as well, not to just stay quiet at times like these. Plus, I love my badge, I’m never taking it off, so I had to pay my dues! xx

It is important, for you and your colleagues at this time but I'd also argue it's an important point in social history to capture in real time. I also think its fascinating to observe and compare how different cultures and generations manage social change. Personally I think the badges are a stroke of absolute genius, I'd be wearing mine with pride also. It moved me deeply, but this is also the life your living right now so be sure to go gently and kindly, wrapping yourself in a cape of self compassion wherever you're going out to meet the world. All will be well, dear heart.

You are so right, Pam. I keep zooming out and having thoughts like that, like ‘this is a really fascinating process on many levels’ then I thump back down to earth and I’m just living it and getting on my loved ones nerves by banging on about it all the time 😂 I have noticed I’m needing a lot more downtime, so I’m taking that where I can. Change is funny isn’t it - I know you know all about it! - even when it’s wanted it can still be a tricky one to navigate. Thank you again for your words. If you ever have a spare room in your house, please can I come live with you?!❤️ I’m joking, I promise 😂

Totally understandable. Reading did make me grateful for unions and remember their importance, although these days it feels very David and Goliath because Goliath has got all the money... I hope they treat people fairly x

Money talks, as usual. It has made me very grateful for the unions as well. Our reps are so knowledgeable and so focused on making sure we aren’t walked over, it’s really inspiring 😊

Whatever happens to you, I'm sure will be for the best. You'll make the most of it. I'm so sorry you and your colleagues are going through this unpleasant situation filled with dread and uncertainty. It's a shame that such an illustrious company with an important history in and imprint on Spain is changing in a completely different direction. How great though that it helped you find yourself and you could be an editor and call yourself a writer there. Invaluable.

Thanks for sharing this with us. Mucha suerte, querida amiga, vecina, socia y compatriota.

what an unsettling time for you, Jayne. So sorry that you have to go through this, but hope you get what's best for you out of it. I recall my first day of work for Liverpool Polytechnic when it was still part of the Council. by 10 am I had a redundancy notice!

I suppose if nothing else it is an interesting lesson in what is consistent between cultures (greed, for example) and what is different (Love the pins/buttons with colourful slogans!). I'm so sorry though that you 'get to' learn all this. Wishing you all the best.

Absolutely - that’s a really good point. The whole experience has made me feel really lucky to live in a country where you can plaster your workspace with placards and protest posters without fear. And, above and beyond that, unite with colleagues in really quite a beautiful way 😊

It’s such an awful (but depressingly familiar) tale of corporate greed. Shareholders don’t care about anything past buying up a company they can decimate for profit. I love how passionately your supporters rallied from within and without to be in place for you - I am sure everyone who becomes familiar with the situation will feel similarly given its wonderful history and what it has historically stood for. A horrible time, so unsettling and uncertain. Sending solidarity from London! X

Jayne Marshall's avatar

Yep… It’s a sadly familiar tale. But you are also right about the passion. If nothing else we aren’t going down without having put up a really good fight. On Wednesday we had a ‘protest coffee’ - we all downed tools at the same time and had a coffee together outside the conference room where the managers were meeting. We were maybe 80 people. We were deafening, they probably felt scared to come out 😂 Thank you for the solidarity from London ❤️
